First hunting season, now trial season.
We had a wonderful hunting season this year. Good rain elevated quail populations from a previously terrible year, to acceptable levels. We found big coveys though the total number of coveys encountered per day were average at best. We were happy and proud of mother nature for bringing back the numbers from a terrible year. Season ended with good numbers still being found.
This season’s moisture is off to a good start so we have great promise for this next year.
Trial season has ended for me. My son Brandon was trialing full time but with new responsibilities to his new bride and now a future daughter, he has pulled back the reins a bit to focus on his new family. … …That’s appropriate and I am proud of him for being responsible. He may trial weekends again this fall but can’t trial full time just yet until he and his new little family get settled in.
I took over trialing for Brandon in late January. Since then I have accumulated approximately 12 total open points and 7 amateur points on dogs that I trained. I am proud of these dogs. 2 are just a hair shy of being FC’s. I know the owners must be proud. Trialing is expensive so when you can trial half of a season and accumulate enough points to put a title on a dog, or nearly enough, a lot has been accomplished, especially when the dogs are just 2 or 3 years old.
Now my sights are focused on training hunting dogs and preparing for my annual trip to Montana. Montana is like a rebirth each year and it cements my position as a pro trainer. It is where my skills are tested to develop dogs on wild birds. It is enjoyable yet challenging. Great up and coming dogs such as Gunner, Shooter, Lady, Tula, Piper, Nubbin’, Champ and other dogs associated with my kennel get to cut their teeth on wild birds and develop their skills to the max.
All I have is 4 months training hunting dogs here at home before I depart for Montana. It goes by fast every single year. I am grateful to the good Lord for my ability to train dogs and appreciate my loyal clients who send their dogs to me year in and year out. Thanks for your time. Happy training!
