Reflection of big running Brittanys in a walking trial
It has taken me a few days to get caught up around the kennel here for me to finally sit down and write my thoughts about the walking trial experience with big running dogs.
First off, a young dog with little experience and training in the puppy stakes or derby will run big, period. My primary concern was to not lose a dog that fit into this profile.

Can big running dogs hunted from truck, Polaris Ranger and horse handle for a foot hunter?
Good question. Come out this weekend to the Indians Nations Walking Field Trial at the Martens Ranch, one mile south of exit 255 on I-40.

Pups started on wild birds vs. started on pen raised birds
Today was interesting. Just another example of the way it was back then and the way it is nowadays. Here’s what I mean.
Back in the day, in the day of my Grandfather and his forefathers, dogs were trained with basic tools and one essential tool, wild game.
I was working with a 10 month old pup today that I personally started on wild birds this season starting in August up in Montana. This pup has been on wild pheasant, wild sharptail grouse, wild huns and wild bobwhite quail in just a few months. This pup started out like any pup by figuring what a wild a bird is then that they are fun to chase then she figured out she better slow down and start pointing, etc.
This pup has been pointing well for the last couple of months which is awesome.

Snap shot from past hunts
I was thinking this morning while I was working dogs in the 40 plus degree chilly air that I have really had some good times afield. I think the camaraderie and which dog offered that moment is most remembered though I do certainly remember tons of dog work.

“Free bird dog training” vs. paid bird dog training
New folks, that is, new folks who are new to training bird dogs always seem to think they will save a dime and it will be more enjoyable. Well they are partly right.
Partly right in that it will be enjoyable if you are a patient person willing to spend whatever is necessary to do the job right yourself. If you are an impatient sort of person and unwilling to spend money on your dog’s training, then wrong on both parts.
