Worst things you can do when hunting birds with your Brittany

Here’s a list of things I consider to be bad when hunting with your dog that could cause training issues:

…………………

………..1. Shooting a bird that your dog busted whether you were close to the dog or not (unless a pup).

2. Wrestling your dog for the bird instead of using a pressure point to encourage him to release gently.

3. Allowing your dog to steal point.

4. Shocking your dog with an e-collar for a command that he really doesn’t know well before you took him hunting.

5. Constantly talking to your dog thus encouraging him to yo-yo.

6.  Shooting a bird on the ground.

7.  Failing to have proper identity tags on your dog in case he gets lost.

8.  Failing to have a first aid kit in case of emergency.

9.  Hunting him too long for the conditions without proper rest breaks, water, boots, etc.

10.  Allowing him to make simple mistakes without on the spot proper correction.

If you have more mistakes to add to the list, please do!

Happy Hunting and Merry Christmas!

11. Hunting your dog with a poorly trained, or green broke dog, (or any dog that is an unknown quantity) before your dog is seasoned and solid.

12. Hunting inappropriate game, or in an area teaming with Jack Rabbits, Whitetailed Deer, porcupines, or skunks (need I mention snakes?), before pup is ready/conditioned.

13. Shooting too close to your dog at flush (usually associated with poor quality caged birds, but can happen with wet wild birds, birds in dense cover, worse when shooting with one eye closed).

14. Hacking, over using locate beeper, encouraging dog to hunt closer than necessary, for the cover, and just generally not trusting your dog, and his training.

15. Not hunting often enough.

I have done at least half of these, and a couple on Dave’s list, but will endever to rectify this, in the upcoming year, especially number 15.
