Yard work can be about enjoying life
Today started as an ordinary day for me. I yard worked the starting dogs, played with young pups, flew birds, sound conditioned, etc.
It’s a lot of fun to get the young pups all spun up over live flying birds. I always save that for last. Taking a group of 12 week old pups and giving them birds is akin to … the boss man walking in at quitting time and handing you a bonus check. It just sends you home whistling ‘Dixie’.
The yard working lessons today were good too. It’s nice when dogs are ‘getting it’ and starting to do it right with fewer corrections. Sometimes I think days like this are meant to bolster my confidence. On great days like today, as I’m walking around the farm with the dogs at heel, I think, ‘man, am I good at this or what?’ as opposed to the days when I think ‘God please send this dog a clue because I’m not getting through’. The Lord giveth and he taketh away I suppose. Today was a ‘giveth’ day.
Part of the reason the day turned out so great was that cool fall air blew in around 10:30 a.m. The leaves rustled, trees swayed and my desire to work dogs increased exponentially. You know what I mean, it kinda bolstered my giddy up. The leaves are changing which means they are blowing off the trees thus offering a parade of colors. Days like this are the times when you you are glad to be alive, outdoors and just soaking it in. Top that off with pups and birds and it just doesn’t get any better.
Y’all take care.
P.S. Hey, be a mentor and take your kid huntin’. Don’t forget to mentor one of his young friends as well. If you have a non-hunting friend at work, take him or her too!
