9 coveys in 4 hours, not bad!
Yesterday’s training session on wild birds went well. Most of the experienced dogs had good bird contact while some of the younger dogs went birdless. Coveys were large averaging 25 birds or more. One covey was a bona fide bevy, a large group of 40 plus birds.
Conditions started out cool … in the 50’s while it was quite hot by noon thus shutting us down.
We have several nice stop to flushes and points. Early season birds were flushing several at a time vs. the entire covey flushing at once.
Several dogs needed correction but were in good order after the flushes. Singles work was difficult as inevitably they would fly into the tall broom weed and disappear.
Though many of the dogs were in good shape, running through the resistance of tall broom weed made it difficult for them. Some large patches of catclaw were found as well which offered one more obstacle for the dogs to contend with. The birds were found in varying cover which ranged from edge to wide open fields with solid stands of broom weed and scattered mesquite. I have good pics of the broom weed and will post them in the next few days.
That’s it for today! If you hunt in Texas, please pray for winter to start!
