An enjoyable private lesson
Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Steve and Austin Harman from Oklahoma. They brought their two one year old Brittanys Gen and Rafe with them to the lesson.
I always start every lesson by … [Read more →]

Females or males?
I often get asked which is the better sex to own. The answer is both.
Males and females from the same litter have about a 5 pound difference on average assuming mom and dad are in standard and about the same size. Many factors go into the equation. Males are usually a bit larger than females.
With genetics… [Read more →]

Brittany Puppy firsts
Today was fun. I always enjoy making folks happy by providing them with a warm, cuddly Brittany pup. The Hall’s picked up their little female pup today and were simply overjoyed. Preston’s wife Erin was like a kid in the candy store. Those are awesome moments.
They have a lot of ‘firsts’ that will come fast as puppy rapidly grows up.
Puppy firsts are a terrific experience… [Read more →]

Dog Food Budget and just who we buy our products from matters!
Today I picked up a pallet of dog food for the kennel (Brandon’s trial dogs, my clients hunting dogs and my personal dogs).

Does your Brittany have a toy box?
For the uninitiated, that question sounds like a joke. To those of us who know, it’s no joke!
I suppose my Brittanys have had an ‘official toy box’ … [Read more →]

Wild Pheasant hunting tactic #3 for one or two hunters, with or without a dog.
Often us bird hunters find ourself alone hunting for one reason or another. Usually our day off doesn’t coincide with our hunting partner’s day off or something like that. Wild pheasant hunting alone can be a bummer or it can be the most exciting hunt of your life!
Since I own several Brittany’s I can pick my favorite for whatever type hunt it will be. For example, Nubbin’ or Peanut will hunt close when asked as they are very experienced and well trained. My favorite pheasant hunting dog of all time was my now departed ‘Chief’. I named him Chief when I was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in 1992 while serving in the Navy and hence the name “Chief’s Brittanys”.
I had read or been told over the course of my life, I can’t remember exactly where I heard it, to hunt pheasant … [Read more →]

Cold Front moves in, Brittanys excel
Just yesterday, as I drove home from Kansas, I was telling my son that the only thing I dislike about returning home to Texas from my Montana home is that October in Texas is still hot. Indeed yesterday it was warm.
Shortly after arriving home last evening there was a big front that pushed into our region. The wind blew hard then was followed by rain and cold temperatures. Whew! What a relief! I love the 4 seasons and I particularly enjoy fall and winter.
Colder temps mean the Brittany … [Read more →]

Home at last!
Well 8 weeks on the road I am home! What an awesome sight!
It’s always bittersweet to leave Montana every year but I have business to conduct back home and besides, if I stayed a day longer I’d be picking up aluminum cans on the roadside to pay for fuel!
Wouldn’t you know that fuel was high when I left then it went down just a tiny bit before we were to leave then back up again? Fuel in Montana is always 15 to 25 cents more per gallon for everything than down south. If I didn’t absolutely love living and training up there, I wouldn’t do it because of expense however, it is absolutely the right thing to do for bird dogs as they learn so much up in Montana.
This year was a bit different … [Read more →]
